HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY
The Nahant Public Library was founded in 1819, the third oldest in Massachusetts after Franklin and Harvard. Our library became a free public library in 1872. The present library building was designed by the Boston firm of Ball and Dabney, and opened June 1, 1895, and was the first electrified building in Nahant.
LIBRARY MISSION STATEMENT
The Nahant Public Library, an essential public institution, strives to serve as an accessible and responsive information and literary center for all residents of the Nahant community and beyond. In a welcoming environment, with diverse materials, programs and services, the library’s mission is to stimulate the imagination, nurture literacy, and promote cultural enrichment. The Nahant Public Library also provides access to the tools, technological and traditional, which empower people to find and use information and encourage lifelong learning.
Bring a valid Massachusetts ID showing your current address to receive your library card.
The library has books, audio books, magazines and DVDs available for check-out.
Patrons may borrow a maximum of 10 items per account
Patrons may borrow 2 DVDs per account
If we do not have it on our shelves, chances are we can get it for you through our inter-library loan program, which allows our patrons to have items from another library sent to Nahant for pickup. The wait time is usually 1 or 2 weeks, but varies depending on a few factors.
Books and audio books - two weeks with two renewals (except on items requested by another patron)
Magazines - one week
DVDs - one week with one renewal
TV Shows - two weeks with no renewal
FEES AND FINES
Books, audio books and magazines - 10 cents
DVDs - $1.00 per day
There are three ways to renew your items
1. log on to your account and renew online
2. call the library
3. visit the library
Patrons can return items via the book drop outside the door on Nahant Road or by coming inside the library.

Black and White - 20 cents
Color - 50 cents
